Andrew Shaffer, MD, PhD

Dr. Andrew Shaffer is a native of the state of Minnesota.  He is a graduate of the University of North Dakota School of Medicine, and completed his General Surgery Residency at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine in Royal Oak, Michigan. After finishing an ECMO fellowship at the University of Michigan, Dr. Shaffer completed a Cardiothoracic Fellowship at the University of Minnesota. In 2017, Dr. Shaffer joined the faculty at the University of Minnesota as an Associate Professor in Cardiothoracic Surgery. He is board certified in Thoracic Surgery. His research interests include ex-vivo organ perfusion, ECMO, mechanical circulatory support, and cardiothoracic surgical outcomes.  His clinical interests include adult cardiac surgery, aortic surgery, and surgical treatment for heart or respiratory failure. His goals are to provide world-class cardiac surgical care with a compassionate patient-focused team, provide excellent operative facilities, and immerse himself in clinically pertinent research efforts.
